Thermography in Landfill

Thermographic technology is constantly expanding, and its use has reached the most varied sectors: construction, mechanical, electronics, process controls.

In all these cases, thermography allows to improve the safety and quality of the processes and consequently optimize the results

In the application that is illustrated below thermography want to help quickly identify thermal anomalies in landfill and therefore be an additional instrument to the research techniques already in use

Normally landfill main events to consider are:

  • Beddings
  • The diffusion of biogas
  • The dispersion of the leachate.

The first point can be treated through techniques:

  • Photogrammetry to detect deterioration or degradation of the surface or to determine if the beddings produce water stagnation.
  • Digital terrain modeling to derive the volumes of abbancamento landfill and calculate, by analyzing multi-temporal volumes abbancati in a given period.

As for the other two points, the use of thermal imaging, allows to control two of the fundamental aspects of the operational management of the landfill.

Knowing that, during it’s climb biogas carries with it part of the heat produced by the reactions of decomposition, thermal imaging can be a valuable tool to identify the variations in temperature that would occur at the surface at the points where the biogas find a way out. If the material is uneven, that is if there are ongoing production of heat or there are external factors that affect the temperature, you will have in the thermograms of thermal anomalies
