So what do you need to know before you fly your drone for fun? We have put together some general rules formulated by the FAA, along with links to further your research and education on the subject.
General FAA Must Know Rules
Before you fly outside you must:
- Register your UAS if it weighs more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds
- Label your UAS with your registration number
- Read and understand all safety guidelines
You must be:
- 13 years of age or older (if the owner is less than 13 years of age, a person 13 years of age or older must register the small unmanned aircraft)
- A U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident*
* Visiting foreign nationals must register their UAS upon arrival in the United States (online registration serves as a certificate of ownership).
Safety Guidelines
- Fly at or below 400 feet
- Keep your UAS within sight
- Never fly near other aircraft, or within 5 miles of controlled airport
- Never fly over groups of people
- Never fly over stadiums or sports events
- Never fly near emergency response efforts such as fires
- Never fly under the influence
- Be aware of airspace requirements
- Follow the Academy of Model Aircraft Policies (Recommended by FAA and now required by State of Michigan HB 0992 – 2016) AMA Safety Guidelines

Michigan Specific Regulations
** NEW** House Bill 0992 as Passed December 13th, 2016 ** NEW**
Michigan DNR Laws state drones can not be used in any aspect of hunting, or to harass hunters.
You may not operate a drone over the Michigan Capitol Building without special authorization.
